Many homeowners opt to purchase an electric log splitter because it negates the backbreaking work of having to split wood by hand. These models are ideal for properties that only require small amounts of work, as they aren’t as powerful as petrol-powered ones. What do you do, however, when your splitter begins experiencing problems? Can you troubleshoot them yourself?

Bent Push Rod

The push rod is the name given to a hydraulic cylinder that extends when pressure is added via the hydraulic pump. When a log with uneven ends is inserted into the splitter, it can sometimes cause the push rod to bend. To troubleshoot this problem, you will need to replace the hydraulic arm, which involves a number of separate parts.

Ram Head Breaking

The weld for the ram head, which engages the wood and pushes it onto the axe, can break if uneven pressure is applied to the plate. This problem can be rectified by grinding the original weld off the ram plate and hiring a qualified welder to re-weld the plate back onto the mount. You must ensure that the weld is solid, however.

Tripping Breakers

These log splitters contain an engine that runs off an electrical connection that requires 15amps. When the motor is struggling to cut through a piece of wood, however, more electricity is drawn to the machine, which is often enough to trip the circuit breaker. To troubleshoot this problem, you will need to avoid cutting hard timbers.

Spluttering Engine

These splitters are used for quite dirty jobs, meaning that their motors can often become clogged with grime and debris. One area that you do not want to be dirty is your fuel tank, as this can clog up the fuel lines and cause the engine to splutter instead of run smoothly. Try draining the fuel tank and giving it a thorough clean.

Whilst there are a number of other problems that your electric log splitter may experience during its lifetime, it is important to keep in mind that these will need to be tended to by a professional, otherwise you will risk damaging the machine even further. If you are unable to rectify any of the above problems using the troubleshooting tips provided, you will also need a professional repair.
